The Young Family
The Young family has been grinding
cornmeal for the Hattiesburg area since 1939.
While our country was still under the
grip of the Great Depression, the Young family practiced "tolling"
as a means of payment for our grinding service. Since money was
scarce, my grandfather would grind a family's corn in exchange for
a percentage of their corn instead of money. The practice of
"tolling" helped families reap the benefits of planting their own
corn for food, without having to pay to have it ground.
